Having gained the Education Prize, and the Cornet Progress Prize during training, he gave up the violin to concentrate on the cornet and trumpet.
In 1966 he joined the Home Fleet Band at HMS Pembroke, Chatham. Over the following seven years he served with the Bands of HMS Victorious, HMS Hermes, HMS Daedalus, HMS Excellent, and HMS Eagle, during which time he travelled to many parts of the world, including North America, the West Indies, the Indian Ocean, Russia and Africa. In 1973 he moved to the Staff Band of the Royal Marines School of Music, Deal.
In 1974 he was appointed as the Bands Principal Cornet and Trumpet player, a position he held until the closure of the School in 1996. On his retirement from the Royal Marines in April 1998, Jon was appointed as Professor of Trumpet at the new Royal Marines School of Music at HMS Nelson, Portsmouth. He still pursues a busy musical life playing for all kinds of musical functions, including freelancing with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and playing with the Solent Symphony Orchestra, and Southampton Symphony Orchestra. Jon is also a founder member of The Royal Marines Association Concert Band.
